Gay : A man who is attracted to only men in both a physical and emotional way.
Lesbian : A woman who is attracted to only women in both a physical and emotional way.
Bisexual : An individual who is attracted to both sexes in both a physical and emotional way.
Trasgendered : Never used this term, I figured it was the same as transexual, but the dictionary definition says it can be the same as either transexual or transvestite.
Transvestite : Someone who dresses in the stereotypical clothing of the opposite sex.
Transexual : Someone who feels their biological sex isn't "correct" and feels they should naturally be the opposite sex.
Questioning : Someone unsure of their sexuality or possibly someone who feels they are unable to label themselves with a specific sexual orientation.
Curious : Someone who feel attracted to one sex, but has a curious attraction to the other sex that may or may not fade after an experience with that sex.
Straight : Someone who is attracted to only the opposite sex in both a physical and emotional way.

I'd like to point out that there are other terms you could have added like Pansexual or Asexual.  They are sexual orientations as well, just not ones that you hear about often.

Pansexual is a person who is attracted to all sexes including transgendered folks. I'm pansexual, and I don't see gender, to me love is love. That's just my definition.

Gay, same sex attraction
Lesbian, a woman who loves other women

Bisexual, someone who can, or has, been sexually intimate with both genders. Sometimes attracted to both at the same time (I was in my 20's), sometimes one is dominant while the other is dormant.

Trasgendered: someone who has traits of two genders.
Transvestite: someone who temporarily assumes traits of their opposite gender, but mostly lives as their birth gender
Transexual: someone who is in the process of transistioning from one gender to another.
Curious: someone who is in the process of exploring their sexual and romantic desires
Straight: opposite sex attraction
Questioning: To pick apart what you feel, why you feel it, and what it means. An ongoing process for all of the above.

Gay - male attracted to male
Lesbian - female attracted to female

Bisexual - attracted to both or ether sex

Transgendered - an umbrella term

Transvestite - (from Latin trans- across, over and vestere to dress or to wear)

Transexual - One who's birth gender is not their birth sex

Androgyne - a mixing of masculine and feminine and/or a balance of both

Intersex - born with features of both sexes

Genderqueer - a person who challenges gender roles and binary notions of gender.

Third Gender- a common belief in many cultures, some asian cultures identify as many as five genders.

Straight - a perfect fit for the common binary beliefs of sex and gender

A common umbrella term might be "LGBT", it covers a number of different groups, each of these groups may have any number of sub groups. to make the umbrella larger in this case you simply add a designator such as Q and/or S

the term transgender traces back to 1969 when Virginia Prince  coined "transgenderal" to describe People who choose to live full-time in the opposite gender to their sex.

in 1969 Gender Reassignment Surgery (GRS) also known as a "Sex Change" was simply out of reach for most transsexuals
Virginia reasoned that if one cannot change their sex, they can change their gender. I believe it was a effort to step away from the "sex" part of transsexual.

We Have the BBC to thank for turning the term into an "umbrella" in a 1979 radio program  involving both transsexuals and transvestites. used the term group both  identities together.

As to who the Transgender umbrella covers. in my opinion it covers almost any one who wants to stand under it.  it is not meant to cover any criminal activity or behavior.

The Bugis  of Sulawesi, Indonesia acknowledge three sexes (female, male, hermaphrodite), four genders (women, men, calabai, and calalai), and a fifth meta-gender group, the bissu.

A research paper about  the Bugis

Are all these different definitions, and genders, really necessary?
well i cant anwser that all i can say is that they are on the table.
