Most folks are scared at one point or another.  It's a pretty natural reaction to things like high school hazing and the so-called 'Defense of Marriage act'.
The awesome part is that things ARE getting better over time.  There are some conservative holdout states and the military to consider, but even 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' has been brought up for review recently.
