Apparently University of Fairbanks is doing research on Furries. I have directed them here, and I figure I should direct you all to them as well.

Glad to be of Service.

I always thought "furries" were just anthropomorphic animals, I didn't realize it was a name for the fans untill sometime the year before last.  =P

But I guess in that sense I've been a "furry" since I was 2-4, I am almost 22 now.

In my opinion, being a "furry" is just someone who enjoys anthro and animal artwork (be it movies, games, traditional art, cartoons, etc).  Not someone who thinks they are an animal, or wears fursuits, etc.

Of course, those types of people CAN be furries, like most fursuiters are.  XD

Haha... I don't have much more to say, wish I did.

Apparently University of Fairbanks is doing research on Furries. I have directed them here, and I figure I should direct you all to them as well.

I have been aproached with this question alot reacently so I am going to bump up  this thread, and point out the  UAF servay again. Though I have been through that servy and found it rather usless as far as collecting furry data. ...

I have emailed the professor doing the work, told them about this site, and offered my assistance and got nothing back.

I have even tried calling and ... again got nothing back.

I figure that if a paper is going to be written on furries it should be done with as much infomation as possible.

So I revamp this thread and ask people to go through it and correct me were I am wrong, and post there opinions.

For those that have not read this. I ask you to read through and discover your own insite into the furry world.

For each Furry the discription of furry is there own. Dispite the simularities, each furry has there own idea. and some furries are very catholic about who can be a furry and who can't. lol.

Besides I know there are some new furs here on AKC so I am wondering what a your views on what furry is to you? and what you think a furry should be? What classifies as a furry.
Glad to be of Service.

Ahem, If I may bump this thread.
I'm going to go off the topic. The sheer title. Well what is a furry? There is no great answer for that. After all everyone's' view varies. Now although I believe when you are a furry you often just know it there are determining characteristics.

I believe when you are a furry you have a certain level of obsession. If you have ever heard "ask a furry" on youtube the best comparison I have hears was furries to sci-fi fans. Now, we all know with a sureness what a sci-fi "geek" is I presume. Well it is like being a sci-fi fan in two primary aspects.
-One, the fursuits. Think of them as character costumes such as a star wars fan wearing a clone trooper outfit.
-Two, the level of obsession I was referring to.

Now there are two factors I find to be highly controversial.
-One, you are a parson who gathers with other people interested in anthropomorphic art on the internet
-Two you must have a fursona.

Now even fursona is slightly controversial word but that's  another conversation for another day.

One of the big factors it seems almost every "furry" agrees on is that you call and deem yourself a furry.

And to anyone interested in furry for yiff alone- If you call yourself a furry you are a dumn ass (please excuse the french). I'm sorry but that is a subculture.

To be a furry you do not need make or read furry art. I suppose but if you do it is an indicator that you may be a furry due to an interest. It depends all on how big a deal it is made out to be by the reader/writer.

To sum it up, I see furry as an anthropomorphic style sci-fi geek. Basically.
