I wonder, are they planning on supporting FFXI after the release off FFXIV? I could imagine them keeping FFXI around in case XIV flops hard (which I doubt, but it could happen), but I could also see them trying to make people move onto the new from the old. I've seen it done before, so if that's the case, this could be their last harrah of FFXI. On the other hand, a level 99 cap will also make the vast majority of the content in the game..well, silly. Unless they add a TON of content for 99 (which I really doubt).

Not sure where this is going. I'm personally waiting for FFXIV before getting back into MMOs, since most the others lost their luster with me long, long ago. Sorry to segway there.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to FFXIV.  From what I've heard, it sounds different enough from other MMORPGs to give it a chance, and has the familiar FF theme to it that I actually enjoy.  It still makes me sad that I don't like FFXI very much, since I really like the setting and basic ideas behind the game, just not how it actually is.

I've heard from interviews with the people working on FFXI and FFXIV that they do plan on supporting FFXI even after FFXIV's release, I'm just not sure if they actually will.  Maybe this increase to level 99 as the level cap gives them a stronger reason to add more content after its release?  It's a potentially risky move because if they don't expand enough to fill the 76-99 gap, they'll lose tons of players, not including the players who will probably leave because getting to 75 was hard and time-consuming enough.  Who knows, maybe they can pull it off in a way that doesn't make older players (really all they have left) feel screwed over.  But if FFXI fails, that just leaves more resources available for them for FFXIV. *shrug*
