Monotheism breeds intolerance?
« on: 2007, January 27, 05:13:28 pm »
I was at a website called positiveatheism.org.  I love to go there for their list of quotes.  I was skimming through the FAQs and I saw one section called "Monotheism Breeds Intolerance."  Basically, what they were saying was nearly every monotheistic religion has been filled with violence, and almost all the polytheistic religions are completely absent.

You can read the entire article at the link below, under the section g-ii.

How would you account for the violence by the polytheistic Hindu of India against their gay and Moslem populations?  How would you explain the intolerance (and in the recent past violence) of the polytheistic Shinto of Japan?  There are polytheistic tribes in the jungles of Southeast Asia and South America that frequently make war with one another.  I think all religions have the potential to breed intolerance.  I think your website just didn't do their homework.

Yeah, that's how I felt, too.  I do know about violence that has been committed in the name of polytheistic religions.

But either way, it's a great website.  It has an wonderful collection of quotes, and the owner is actually very friendly.  Unfortunately, I don't know if he's even alive at this point. :(
