Equality Works Everywhere!

I’m sure we’ve all heard about the recent victories for gay marriage supporters in Vermont & Iowa, but have you heard about Florida? Last week, GLBT rights activists & allies tasted victory in Gainesville, FL, when they defeated an effort to strip them of their civil rights. We should let their success inspire us. Read Tiffany’s post at Bent Alaska to learn more about their victory…

Welcome, Jason Tashea!

Our new fundraising chair, Jason Tashea, is putting together a great fundraising plan for Equality Works. He’s had experience working on a couple of candidate campaigns here in Anchorage and is volunteering his skills to help ensure that GLBT have equal protection in Anchorage. He’s cooking up a couple of fun events in the near future, but you could make his work a little easier by making a donation today.

What’s Happening Around Town

Equality Works has been invited to two parties on the same night!

If you haven’t heard already, the twice-annual  Womyn’s Dance will be held at the Snow Goose (717 W. 3rd Ave.) on Friday, April 17th. If you and your womyn friends are planning to attend, be sure to stop by the Equality Works information table to learn about how you can help our cause. (The fun starts at 7:30, the party organizers request $5.00 donation at the door to help cover the cost of expenses.)

Those ages 14-19 who are looking for something to do on April 17th should definitely attend the annual Pride Prom being held at the Lidia Selkregg Chalet in Russian Jack Park, 1600 Lidia Selkregg Lane, sponsored by Anchorage Gay-Straight Alliance students and supporters. Tell your friends, students, or children to stop by our table to make some art in the name of Equality and get their picture taken in fancy duds. (Admission $5 donation or 5 canned goods.)

House Parties

Looking for an excuse to spend an evening with friends? Interested in getting to know others in your community who care about equality? Consider hosting a house party for Equality Works. They’re a great way to bring together your friends and neighbors to learn why LGBT people deserve civil rights protections and how we can make that happen in Anchorage.

Don’t think you can do it alone?

Then consider co-hosting with a couple of friends. As a bonus, you’ll be sure to get more people to attend this way.

If you’re interested, download our house party kit to help you plan your party. We’re here to assist you in making your event a success. Contact Tiffany McClain, 907-258-0044 ext. 101 if you want to host.

New Volunteer Opportunity

Are you looking for a way to channel your love of the Internet & social network platforms like Facebook into something positive? Do you want to make Anchorage a place where all residents and workers can live free of harassment and discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity? If so, consider applying to be a Web Content & Social Networking Volunteer for Equality Works!

Time Commitment:

2-4 hours a week, very flexible. You can work anytime, from anywhere.
