Star in the mountians

Suprisingly by asking this question to people I work with and see daily, I can not find the answer to this question.

What is that star in the mountians to the east of anchorage that is lit up in the winter?

Why is it there?

Who put it there?

What does it stand for?

Ect.

One person asked me if I was religious after I asked him, I told him ya right before death. He laughed but got side tracked before he could tell me more.

So maybe it has something to do with a christmas or christian carol.

any ideas.

It may be to the east of you but it is also to the northern part of town.

Okay I figured that since we are AKCommunity We darn well better know what this star is.



Ya I know it's not the greatest Pic in the world but its the best I could find in a quick reseach.

On May 5th 1959 The US Army placed a Huge Christmas Star on Army Air Defense Command Nike missile site known as Site Summit. For Anchorage Residents ever since 1960.

There are still some actively maintained cell phone towers up there, but mostly buildings shrouded in rumors, most telling of a concealed military project, nuclear weapons and secret technology that hint at an earlier time.

A heritage of Cold War defense. The Army wants to take it down, but Vets, and others have fought and got it sanchioned as a Historical Site. They plan on turning it into a turist trap to help fund it and keep it alive.

When the site was active from 1959-1979, Soldiers were prepared to launce Nike Hercules Missiles to take down Russian Bombers if Anchorage was ever threatened.
