Any D&D players around?
« on: 2010, February 28, 10:09:11 pm »
I'm an avid D&D player and was just wondering if there were any other people out there like me.
What ed. do people like to play, fav classes and fav races.
Any cool stories?

I will try to post some of my stories later.

Ooh!  Ooh!  I like to play, even having very little experience!  But you already know that, hehe.

I've only played three different games in my life, the first being just one session when I was 8 or 9.  I remember it was AD&D and I was a gnome illusionist.  I don't think I brought much to the game, lol, but it was fun.

The second time was actually about a year ago, 3.0/3.5 edition, it was a fun campaign, I really enjoyed the storyline and the setting, but I ended up giving up on the game for personal reasons. :(  Looking back on it, the reasons were probably pretty stupid, but oh well, what's done is done.  I played a gnome druid, although it was a high-powered campaign so being a druid didn't mean much, lol.

My favorite part about it was the DM allowed my character to use his two ferret animal companions as cohorts after getting leadership.  They were "awakened" so they were given real intelligence, and I was allowed to give them character classes as well, so I had a little ferret cleric (my "flerric") and a little rogue ferret.  Unfortunately I never got to have the ferret rouge sneak attack someone with his 1-damage bite attack.  It would just be amusing to picture this little ferret sneak attack with a bite and rip out a hamstring (as the DM suggested, lol), dealing 1 + 3d6 damage.

And the third time, well, you know about, hehe.  Playing the kitsune Wu Jen, boomy-magic user, was fun, but the taboos I picked for the character were no fun to play. :(  It's an interesting idea to have a language barrier between my character and others... but it became inconvenient and irritating. :(  The new character, the little dragonborn kobold Dragon Shaman seems fun though.  And I'm really enjoying the story.  I've actually been curious about the other campaigns that have been run in that world, I kinda wish they were all written into a book or something so I could read about the history of the world, lol.

I still haven't found a preferred class or race yet (although gnomes are cool, hehe), but one day I really wanna try a rogue.  Unfortunately I'll probably always play the game with Cat and he's always a rogue. :(  But I also tend to play healers a lot, just because I don't typically trust other people to do it right, lol.  A trait I've taken from playing too many MMORPGs I think. :P

I think my favorite stories have been out of this current campaign though.  Something about a character going crazy over catnip and another character trying to subdue them with the broad side of a battle axe... and scoring a critical hit and nearly killing the character, is awesome.  In fact, the whole game has been filled with some epic events, even the character deaths, lol.  Sorceror becomes pincushion for goblins in an arena...  Rogue decapitated by a scythe trap he didn't think to search for... Fighter trying to take the hit from the same scythe trap and dying because it scored a critical hit leaving the fighter one hp away from death, and the fighter "winning" initiative between her and the healer, so she died before the healer could cast a cure spell to stabilize her, lol.  Epic.

Look it was not my fault a blade came from the wall. It was the blade who killed the rouge not me.
Glad to be of Service.

I've ran and played in a large amount of D&D games, ranging from 2nd edition up through 4th edition. I finished running a game just recently, actually, and am currently working on an extended storyline in a setting I've used for the past three years or so.

That being said, I'm a bit too busy at the moment to do any serious gaming other than console / PC, but the ability is very much there, though I won't usually run games with a group that I've never been around..I tend to improvise often, and knowing what others will do is paramount to running a successful and fun environment.

Agh, I'm just rambling. I'll be back.

I've played D&D a few times, actually. Honestly, my favorite character (at least in 4th edition) was my Changeling Bard. He was so much fun - and he was a fiesty little fellow. I really like the utility role that Bards play - tiny bit of striker, some leader... And it means I got to roleplay my Changeling (in a Half-Elf persona) skipping around a party with a flute... And I also got to throw monologues and bad jokes at my enemies. Best character for me!

Living in Peter's Creek has made it a bit hard to actually attend a gaming session in quite a while... But I hope to find another one eventually.

I have been playing D&D for about 15 years now, and I have a lot of stories, but not the best at writing them down. My fav char was my first. Her name was Topaz, I did have a whole mess of chars after that which had gem names as well.
She was an elven acrobatic rouge from 2nd ed. I really liked her because she was a miniature Xena, with out the kick ass attitude though. Nothing ever really lives up to your ideal of a char after you play that first one though.
I'm currently running a game with a small group, I like to run mods but have been working on my own world as well. We have a lot of house rules that are really good too. We have a spell point system and max hp for the first 5 lvls and several other things.
Hope to hear a few more stories from everyone

My first memorable character was a pacifist cleric in 3rd edition [not 3.5] (all of my 2nd edition characters were unremarkable, unfortunately) who, as the name states, wouldn't kill or harm anything that was living. My DM allowed me some bonuses (as long as I kept to my creed) which were centered around restraining the living or blasting the heck out of constructs and undead. I vaguely recall one-shotting a Lavawight at level 21 (CR 23 undead), then just ran around healing the group as they took out the other living things that were in the room. Made for a lot of fun RP as well - I made the group pretty angry as my guy ran around destroying all of the black pearls in the room (added as treasure) because they're mostly used in necromantic rituals..think I destroyed a couple hundred thousand GP worth of them, too.. :-\

Ah, the good old days..

Oh man that reminded me of a furry D&D world called Rym that was made by a furry artist, Ollie Canal.  I always wanted to play a game set in that world, it's a shame that the website was never completed. :(  I almost got into a game with some friends that went to UAF when I was living in Fairbanks, but lost touch with them over time so the game never went anywhere.

I think that reading about different worlds can be really fascinating.  That's a reason why I love playing D&D, learning more about a DM's personal world is fun.  Back in our first campaign here, our DM and players would stay over the night before a game (more convenient) and I would sometimes talk with the DM about the details of his world just because it was interesting to me (it got me a few free skill points too, lol).  I mean, his description of the "universe" or solar system or whatever was pretty creative, I thought.

Anyways, here is the Rym website, although it was never completed: http://www.fur.com/~ollie/rym3.html

I love tinkering with campaign settings for tabletop RPGs. Mostly D&D, but Lone Wolf has been under my cutting knife before, as well.

I actually have a campaign setting that I've been working over the last 5-6 years or so, and have ran about 4 total campaigns in it (using old characters as NPCs, as new campaigns start up). The world is called Altheria, and has undergone quite a few changes (I enjoy drawing maps, so there's quite a few maps currently..probably need some re-do'ing, now that I think about it.) That aside, I've always enjoyed running in my own setting - being able to mold and manipulate the happenings and NPCs is much more natural for me than running from an existing setting (Like modules, for instance). I miss GM'ing in my own world, it's a blast.

That being said, I'm almost ready to start running my own campaign here within the next few months. If there's an interest in trying to get something together sometime in the far future, I can put together some house rules on new races that would be available, and just go from there. Feel free to give feedback - I'd love to have a new project on my hands, even if it goes nowhere and nothing ends up happening in the long run. (Base setting would be D&D 4th edition, since I have access to the books and material).

Cheers!

When Shadow was running his game for us, he would apparently use old characters from his gaming history, or reference events from past campaigns.  I thought it was interesting, but I wish I knew more of the story behind those characters or events because every time he'd bring in one of those things, LadyTopaz would giggle or make some sort of comment about it and I'd feel a bit lost.  I really think they need a book or something containing all their gaming sessions written into a story because the bits I've heard sound really interesting. :O

Haha, yeah..I have that problem as well. There's just so much in my head regarding old sessions, characters, and interactions that it's almost impossible to set them on paper. I usually take the time to explain things if someone gets a laugh out of it, but I definitely know what you mean. I sat down and wrote a 12-page timeline, background on all places (continents, cities, people) that most in the world would actually know, and then some extra stuff for people in the know (bards, etc.) That way, I could incorporate past campaigns without alienating non-campaigners while keeping a rich background. Also, I let people read the background notes, then ask questions - usually on a day or week before the actual game, when I'm working on character backgrounds..that way, any questions they have or connections that they want their characters to have are good in their minds, and the RP can flourish and feel more...natural, then having to ask the GM what everything means all the time.

I'm rambling again, so I'll take off for now. Whoops.
