Gay marriage
« on: 2007, April 27, 09:08:09 pm »
I've heard several fellow gay people state that they are opposed to gay marriage, because "in the bible, marriage is one man and one woman." They ignore that marriage under civil law has nothing to do with religion, and churches will always continue to do as they wish. But I digress.

Based on that interpretation though, shouldn't WE NOT BE GAY, because that likewise is in opposition to whats in the bible? The bible is emphatic on the topic - gay is bad.

Now as an atheist, I have qualms about neither gay marriage nor being gay. But why are there gay christians who think gay marriage is bad but not being gay itself?

I ask respectfully.

Meow,
I think it would have to do with there religious upbringing and a confliction with what they belief religiously, and who they believe they are. I am sure in some respects some of them believe they are living a sin, and there for are trying to lead as much of Gods way as possible.
Really though I don’t know the answer to your question. I would suggest asking on, and seeing what he/she has to say about it.
Glad to be of Service.

*Topic Brought back to life*

I think that we face the problem that the religious community has a deep "connection" with the word MARRIAGE, and as long as we try pushing Gay Marriage, we'll face opposition from those in the religious community at large.  I think a MUCH more efficient use of our time and efforts is to find a different word to use (domestic partnership comes to mind) and then lets work toward getting the many and varied rights associated with marriage attached to this newly defined relationship status.
The other thing that we need to try to adequately combat is the notion that gays getting "married" would destroy the institution of marriage...the best way to combat this idea (IMVHO) is to point out that 50-60% of all marriages end in divorce already---for an institution that's supposed to be "until death do us part" that's a pretty high failure rate...seems Str8 people are doing a bang-up job of destroying marriage without our help!
We need to get the courts involved, and press our case using two fronts:  The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution (Equal Protection) and the "Full Faith and Credit Clause of the same US Constitution.

I wouldn't mind the inability to get married if only we could have the same legal benefits without.

Thinking about it...It's not fair that we can't (not that i care on way or the other just taking up a side in the discussion).

If religion and state are kept seperate, than the religious aspect of marrage should be kept out of the states paper work.

The problem is that Marriage was in relegion before there was government paperwork, so really, the state should stay out of the relegious institution.  Thus unless the government institutues something new for EVERYONE, nobody should have marriage benefits.  Attack it from a 'seperation of church and state' issue and take it away from the masses and then something new that is all inclusive can be formed.

I would like to bring up my idea of T'buken'd The union between two people for sake of legal reasons, and for sake of spiritual reasons if the people wish.

By the way, I'd be severely remiss in my Rabid Anti-Clinton Fervor if I didn't point out that Bill Clinton signed DOMA into Law, effectively screwing us out of any opportunity to gain federal recognition of our relationships for the foreseeable future.

Well Im1 commented that the state recognizes marriage because of Christians...well what about the glbt Christians that believe it's ok? Like in MCC why are those one's not recognized?

The Defense of Marriage Act was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996, after moving through a legislative fast track and overwhelming approval in both houses of the Republican-controlled U.S. Congress.

I doubt Democrats are fully to blame for your oppression.  The sh** comes from both sides of the spectrum.

The difference is that Bill Clinton campaigned as a "friend" of our community, as do MOST democrats, whereas with Republicans we know EXACTLY where we stand.  And Bill Clinton acted in perfect character for these fairweather friends we have a tendency to align ourselves with; when it was no longer politically expedient for him, he dropped us like a slutty prom date.

All politicians are two faced liars.  I'm surprised you haven't discovered this yet.
