Chat? IRC?

Does the AK community have an irc channel on furnet or anthrochat or somewhere?

Nope, we've never had a chat anything, Cat thinks that having people in a chatroom would cause people to post less on the forum, since discussions would be had there instead of in threads.

Plus AKC isn't actually a furry community, there's just a lot of furries in it, lol.

meowmix,
We don't have one, for the reason Fox pointed out.

And we are a community for everyone and anyone that wants to use it. Currently we have been taken over by the Alaska furries. hehe.

You know, I think that an IRC chat/etc would actually make MORE people post on the forums, because they'd have discussions and then they would post about them on the forums for posterity. At least that's what -I- think would happen.

That's possible, but I also see the problem of there not being anyone -in- the chat very often, lol.  It's not like AKC is very active...

That's because many of us are parents.  It's difficult enough to get 2 minutes to post a forum message, trying to get two hours to babble inanely in IRC is impossible.

I bet Cat could do it, he spends 24 hours a day babbling inanely on his own, doing a few hours in a chatroom wouldn't be too difficult for him, lol.

Yes, but that's because his son isn't there every day.  That's not true for most of the rest of us.

I want to revive this old topic to say my little bit.

I think that having an IRC channel of sorts would not actually be a bad idea.

Would people post on here less? I think so, but what is one thing this forum lacks that would be solved with a chat room?

Social Interaction in the form of conversations. Starting a thread then having 8 people comment over the week is nice, but it is not the same thing. I have to disagree with Oni's statement and I say that having an IRC channel of sorts would actually help increase user interaction of those using the forum.

So, I started playing around with hosting my own IRC server tonight. Alpha tests have yielded promising results.

P.S. Linux is the sh**.

Would I like to start it? The idea is stark mad, but it would not be to hard (knock on ... wood) to do it. Perhaps I should give you a jingle.
