language and ideology
« on: 2010, May 30, 10:36:45 pm »
on another forum that i frequent there have been a series of arguements regarding the old 'science vs. religion' dichotomy. i personally see the arguement as a semantic misunderstanding because the two disciplines cover different areas of human experience. science deals with material questions. religion ponders what lies beyond our material experience. in my own ponderings i've arrived at a sort of general agnosticism, because our world is always changing and we must be able to entertain whatever new truths that become relevant and release those that end up irrelevant.

r. a. wilson is a favorite of mine because of his playfulness with language and concepts about reality.

so i guess what i'm getting at is that language just seems inadequate to express all experience. when we're building a bridge we should use scientific language. when we have conversations friends or nature (or whatever) and we enjoy 'breath-taking' views, we should use metaphors and stories to relate to eachother. anybody ever at a loss for words? do you prefer expressing yourself precisely or metaphorically?

Mr. Straw
I swear you pic the weirdest things to post on and I love it.
Topics of great debate are hard to stir up here. The secret is to dangle a worm. See if you can't get any ... bite. I know TMAK loves to bite. Us heavy posters have been... Well exteremly busy... I have you saw the way I move around work. lol
Personaly I think if you take all of the religions in the world and put them through a reality sifter, then you will come out with the truth. Because they are all right, and all wrong. They all share the same basic ideas. The "Golden rule," What goes around comes around, Be true to your self, ect. The basics are always there it's just how they are presented.

Language is inadiquite ... So speak with your mind. So much more is communicated that way....course that is assuming you find some one who will listen.

When I speak I prefer to speak in.... .... Truth. Course what they hear is a wholenother story.
Glad to be of Service.

Quote from: Arthur C. Clarke
The greatest tragedy in mankind's entire history may be the hijacking of morality by religion.

Quote from: Arthur C. Clarke
The rash assertion that "God made man in His own image" is ticking like a time bomb at the foundation of many faiths.

hehe, i love all in the family.
i had an english teacher in high school tell me she couldn't stand all in the family because of archie. this was only days after we had read a modest proposal in class (which satirically advocates eating children to fix starvation).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal
i thought all in the family was extremely relevant because of the satirical nature, but somehow she couldn't make that connection and was all hung up on archie being a bigot. somehow i wasn't supposed to get hung up on eating children? ???
so much for teachable moments, lol.
