What do you call them
« on: 2007, May 22, 09:43:35 am »
Your Other half. Traditionaly one is called husband, the other wife or boy friend girl friend.

What do you call yours (if you dont have one what would you call yours)

Like with Fox and I. I call him my companion. Though I still can not find a word that fits what Fox and I are. I continue to search. But companion is the best one that I can find.

the glbt community i have heard many differnt terms from boyfriend, to lover, to mate. But what one do you use and why?
Glad to be of Service.

My words are pretty straightforward.  I use boyfriend for someone I'm seeing, fiancé if we're engaged, and husband if we're married.  I might use "lover" if I'm feeling particularly romantic.

Hmm, well depending of the type of relationship, if it just started, then I would only say gf. However, if the relationship been going on for some time then I would call her mate. I personally like the word “mate”. I would also call her “my lover” why, because I think it’s cute. :D
The one thing I won’t say is “companion” because how I see it, it doesn’t express/give out clearly that the relationship is an actual romantic relationship. Companion can be used in so many ways that I don’t see it as the best word choice for romantic relationships. Does that make sense? :-\

She would be your personal Companion through out life. I supose it depends on ones views of the word. And in witch context it was spoken. One day though I hope to find a word for Fox and I.

*nod* I understand what you are saying and, yes, it all depends on the context of the word.

I am sure some day you and Foxie will find the word that would describe the both of you.  ;D

It really depends on the situation.  If I don't want to reveal he's a guy, I say "significant other."  If I know he's going to be reading it, I say "companion."  But most of the time I just say "boyfriend."  Sometimes "My cat," but no one seems to understand that aside from people that know me.  Not even furries understand it, even when the context it's used in makes it obvious...

I use My Fox sometimes as well. But ya that does seem to get lost on Furries as well. They only seem to understand Mate. LOL.
I think I actually used Significant Other the other day when ACS called about your Cell phone so that I could give them your info and speak on your be half.
But ya situation has a lot to do with it, and also peoples understanding...

Boyfriend just sounds to ... well bleh because i feel like we are beyond that point in our relationship.

Awww, Foxie that is so CUTE!!!!

I heard the word "boyfriend" used only once and that came from Oni. Never heard Foxie said it before.

Because of my gender identity I want to call Luke my 'partner.' I don't think he would mind, but it's easier for he and I to call each other 'husband' and 'wife.'

Curious question. But how does yoru gender identity have to do with what you would call your partner?

Because I do not identify myself as a woman I really dislike the title 'wife.' Even before I realized that I am the way I am I didn't like being called female titles. Don't you think it would be strange if two married men called each other 'husband' and 'wife?' Of course, that's just me.

Well to answer your question. If two married men wanted to call them selfs husband and wife, I would say it makes sense. Much like two lesbians calling them selfs the same thing. Why because each person has a role. Wether it be male, female, both, or neither. And the way i view it some names are simply role based, not sex based.

So then what does the name Partner mean to you then?

Yes, everyone has a role in a relationship, but these are titles and not roles. Father is more of a role and yet we don't usually call fathers 'mothers.' 'Wife' is what we call a married female. 'Husband' is what we call a married male. Two men can be married and each have a role, one the more domestic, and yet I don't see why he should be called the 'wife.' Unless that's the way they do it, and who I am to judge.
