The Golden Compass
« on: 2007, November 15, 09:28:14 pm »

Ever since I saw a sneak preview for this movie earlier this year, it has been my number 1 most anticipated film. It has all so many elements that equal WIN in my book; animal companions called Dæmons who's form speaks of their human's character, vaguely steampunk-esque vehicles zeppelins and other craft, and various types of magic mixed in. Last week I caved in and bought the book trilogy this is derived from (The Golden Compass, the Subtle Knife, the Amber Spyglass) And while I think the second two books kinda let it down from being the new LOTR, it was still the most gripping series of books I've read in quite some time.

There is a lot of controversy swirling around this movie. The books author (Phillip Pullman) is a devout atheist and there many shots taken at the Christian church in the series. And though they decided to remove any direct mention of "god" or the church for the film, there are still many Christian groups calling for a boycott saying that it will lead young, impressionable children on to reading the books. The film's development was very rocky as well. Losing their first director who cited the film being too technically challenging, then losing their second director to have the first return to finish it as a sort of last resort.

But in any case I'll be seeing it right after opening day, hope it isn't a flop. (little extra: go to the official site and click the "Meet your Dæmon" link. Takes you to a quiz that determines what form yours would be. Apparently I'm a mouse :3 )

edit: Its out December 7th for those who haven't seen a preview

Well I guess the best way to get started is to get people to say if they wanna go or not, and what day's they're free.

What days is GC playing?

Here is a thought, we all go as characters from other movies.

Looks like I'll most likely be showing up in Anchorage on the 21st. 20th If I'm lucky and a certain class dousnt have a regular final. Certainly wouldnt want anyone to hold on on seeing it that long, but if theres anyway who still hasn't by then, or wants to see it again, I'd still like to try to make a trip out of it.
